Why (and what) freelancers need to be giant slayers

Whether you're a designer, consultant, or developer, a freelancer's biggest challenge isn't talent - it's the giants you're competing against. And those giants don't win by working harder; they win by thinking strategically.

In this talk, Creative Director, Baz Richardson, will show how shifting from a tactical mindset to a strategic one can help freelancers not only differentiate themselves but shift from surviving freelancers to thriving freelancers (aka Giant Slayers).

Your hosts

Jo & Penni Pickering
We're a married team of two who have been running our website & design studio for 6 and a bit years.

In that time we've been to lots of events and coworking spaces.

(including one regularly invaded by monkeys, but that's a story for another day...)

There's this magic that happens when the self employed come together.

We've got so much from it over the years.

That's why we're starting Cowork Crew.

Oh, and cake. What a great excuse for cake!

Have a question?

Cowork Crew takes the best bits of coworking and networking and jumbles it together in a once-a-month 1 day event.

It’s all about that magic that happens when you bring freelancers and micro business owners together.

You can expect:

  • Friendly faces
  • Time to work & time to meet new people
  • An awesome speaker or a group session on a shared challenge
  • Cake!

We’re here for the self-employed, whatever title you give yourself!

If you run your own thing, with or without partner(s), you’ll fit right in.

The idea is to get us out of the home office/coffee shop/kitchen table and into a room full of lovely folk who get what it’s like to wear all-the-hats.

Of course! We're a super-welcoming bunch!

The 'why' behind Cowork Crew is to help the self-employed get out of the home office/coffee shop/kitchen table and do better because we have each other.

So the speaker topics and our general content will always be aimed at freelancers, founders and micro business owners.

But we love meeting new faces. And if you work from home and fancy a day's company you are very welcome to join us.

We get it, we work for ourselves for many reasons, including schedule flexibility.

Come for as much of the day as makes sense for you.

You can bring lunch with you, or take the day-out excuse to nip to one of the amazing range of local lunch spots.

There’s a range of great cafes on St Giles Street, a tesco nearby if you fancy a meal deal, and we've heard good things about a local sandwich takeaway place (The Sandwich Bar Cafe).

Make sure you leave some room, as we’ll have cake to pick us all up during that mid-afternoon slump!

Vulcan Works has stunning work spaces, and we get to call one of their largest coworking rooms home for the day.

There’s lots of desk space (with plenty of plug points), a TV, Nespresso machine and breakout pod seating in case you need to focus on something for a moment.

There’s also all the normal stuff, like water and toilets.

You’re welcome to take a call during Cowork Crew day. You can tuck yourself slightly out of the ‘main’ space in the breakout space if you want to avoid sitting around others while chatting.

We don’t have a completely private space available (as in a completely separate room) however, so it’s probably not the best time to run a webinar!

The benefits of spending a day coworking together go well beyond getting work done.

Feel free to chat to anyone who has the vibe they’re up for it.

If it feels a little ‘get-stuff-done’ vibey and there’s someone you really want an in-depth chat with don’t worry. There’s sofas and a coffee room in Vulcan Works you can go to as well.

And if you’re worried about being able to focus, there’s pod seating a little away from the main desks you can retreat to.

There's lots of nearby parking. St John's Multi Story Car Park and Commercial Street South Car Park are both a short walk away. You can find full information about both on the West Northants website.

Send us an email at hey@coworkcrew.com and we’ll get right back to you.
